Ile Aux Dames footbridge between Mantes-La-Jolie and Limay (78)

The imposing footbridge

The imposing footbridge over the River Seine is designed as an undulating walkway over the water exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists, with the aim of forging links between Mantes-la-Jolie and Limay by promoting non-motorised mobility. Embodying eco-friendly principles, it runs alongside the road bridge and is supported by the riverbanks and the existing Pont Neuf bridge piers.

A central welded reconstituted box girder forms the trapezoidal backbone of the structure, which varies in height. Covered with wooden decking, the footbridge is around 1.50 m higher than the bridge, from which it is completely separate.

During an interruption to river traffic, the two sections were transported by barge from the port of Limay, where they were assembled, to Mantes-La-Jolie. They were then hoisted by a 66-metre crane and slowly rotated until they reached their bearings on the riverbank near the collegiate church of Mantes-La-Jolie for the first section, and on a green-field site on the Limay side for the second.

Road traffic was not interrupted during the operation.
